Using folk and fairy tales for developing storytelling and public speaking skills
"Old" stories - folk and fairy tales and other traditional stories - use language that is simple, but special - something outside our day-to-day language. Told orally, they have the power to take us out of our noisy day-to-day life and bring us to a place of calm and focus, and create a feeling of community amongst listeners.
Listening to a story communicated by words alone is a different experience from reading a story in an illustrated book or watching it on television or in a movie. Our imaginations must be busy in order to create the images needed to "hear" a story told orally, but this something we humans are programmed to do naturally. We also use our imaginations when tell stories.
Folk tales are familiar, often humourous, and frequently use repeating patterns. They are a great tool to use for developing listening and speaking skills, and working on overcoming public speaking anxiety.
In this participatory workshop, we will explore creating images as we listen to stories, and use this process, through several games and exercises, to experiment with telling a short folk tale without relying on memorization of a text
This two-hour session is suitable for both young adults and adults. You can bring along a short (under 5 minute folk tale) if you have one you like, but there will be a supply of them at the workshop. Be prepared to let yourself go and have fun.
